Knowledge is power and we must go out of our way to build our knowledge base to empower diverse voices. “I found your ability to interweave science, humanity, and calls to action aspirational and what our field needs more of; I found your presentation, and emphasis on authenticity guiding me through the weekend. I look forward to the chance to hear you speak again in the future.”
“The APA Convention’s virtual on demand sessions have finally become available, so I finally got to see Nadine’s Main Stage Presentation on LGBTQ+ International Psychology. Nadine, you were so good!! I appreciated learning more about your childhood experiences (so relatable!) and how they shaped your understanding of the world and psychology. You made so many great points throughout the presentation that I can’t name them all, but I was especially struck by how ethnocentric US psychology is without explicitly acknowledging our ethnocentrism and how much space we take up as US psychologists without acknowledging how colonization has contributed to the space we take up. Thank you for providing space for the diverse experiences of LGBTQ+ people around the globe and highlighting the harm caused by erasure.”
“On behalf of the Psychology Presentation Committee, we would like to thank Dr. Nadine Nakamura for taking the time to speak to our group recently. The presentation was thought provoking and provided valuable insight. We appreciate all of the resources that she shared with us to guide us and our clients to help cultivate critical consciousness. We also want to thank her for her dedication and advocacy in the field of LGBTQ+ psychology.”
“As a queer woman and a psychologist-in-training, it is especially valuable for me to hear the stories of psychologists (LGBTQ or otherwise) who model what it is to carve out paths through barriers they have faced to bring us closer to a more liberated, healthy, and equitable world. I really relate to the beginning of your story and look up to you as an example of what is possible to do as a psychologist. When I see the need to take action that requires me to carve out my own path to contribute to a better world, I will think of the example you have set to help me muster courage.
One last thing I want to share with you is that I love the concept you shared of “me”-search which I have found to be undervalued in many academic spaces. Our unique experiences of course give us insight and perspectives into what the lived experiences of others in similar circumstances may be. When we recognize and capitalize on these understandings, they have immense value for facilitating the building of societies that are more livable for everyone. Thank you for championing these concepts and illustrating their value for other academics.

“As a member of the LGBTQ+ ERG at Codecademy, I was thrilled to have Dr. Nakamura speak to our company as part of our month-long Pride celebration. Dr. Nakamura presented on the topic of intersectionality in the LGBTQ+ experience, and I received nothing but rave reviews from attendees. Dr. Nakamura was engaging and incredibly informative, especially when it came time for Q&A. I would absolutely recommend her as a speaker!”
“
Thank you for coming to present to the Pan-Asian Owls. You provided timely and relevant insights, while engaging our Employee Resource Group. You made quite the impression and I believe the university may invite you back potentially for another opportunity.”
“Nadine came into our community at a charged time. She gave insightful examples and helped people understand their identities and where they fell on the scale of privilege. Additionally, she gave varied examples to help us see our implicit biases. It helped to balance the naysayers who did not welcome to the training. In two hours, we learned a more common language. I wish we could have her back to follow up and add on to what she taught our community!”
“Our Master’s of Science in Athletic Training program has welcomed Dr. Nakamura’s Diversity Equity Inclusion (DEI) workshop for two consecutive years and we look forward to having her as a regular contributor to our program. Dr. Nakamura’s workshops are enjoyable, eye-opening, and educational. Dr. Nakamura has an approachable style that helps participants feel comfortable during potentially-uncomfortable topics.”
